Keenan Alexander - Builder, fisher, hunter, academic

It was 2016 when Keenan was injured, his final year of school. He was representing the undefeated Thames High School First XV, facing Paeroa College in the semifinal. A tackle in the first 15 minutes sent him down and a spinal dislocation meant he didn’t get up. Ask Keenan to recall that time now and he radiates pride for his team, who went on to win the trophy. We say his own achievements are even more remarkable.

Over the next two years, Keenan fought hard to regain the use of his arms while getting to grips with life in a wheelchair. He’s stoked to have found success in academic life, studying for a Bachelor of Business. Talking about his future he bursts with ideas and it’s clear he’s not the type to let anything stop him. By age 24, he’s even managed to crack the tough housing market, commissioning the build of a new home with his sister. In his free time, he’s out fishing as much as humanly possible, pushing his modified 5m boat as far as it will take him. Failing that, he’s off hunting in his hand-controlled side-by-side.

Keenan is grateful for the support of his family and the Rugby Foundation, which provides assistance in more ways than he can list, including personal training, help around the house and legal and vocational advice. In the early days especially, the foundation was a constant advocate.  Keenan reckons that in his situation, you couldn’t ask for more than to have the Rugby Foundation at your back.
