Nostalgic Scots remember 1991

The Scottish thistle has lost its sting since the 1991 side reached the semi-finals of the second Rugby World Cup.

For many teams the All Blacks are a myth. For Scotland they’re a nightmare. The Scots have run aground against the New Zealand rock three times (1987, 1995 and 1999) en route to the semi-finals and when in 2003 they avoided the haka, they crashed out to Australia (33-16) in the last eight. In five Rugby World Cups, Scotland have reached the final four just once, in 1991. Gavin Hastings’ men lost narrowly to England that year and then in the third place play-off they lost to ... New Zealand. In 2007, the Scots will avoid the bad luck quarter-final draw against the All Blacks. They come up against them in their third Pool match. Lifeless these last few seasons, Scotland look unlikely to match their 1991 performance and will probably be happy with a fifth quarter-final.
