The New Zealand Rugby Foundation is an independent charitable trust providing assistance to seriously injured rugby players, their families and providing assistance in other areas of need within New Zealand Rugby. To make a real difference to the quality of life of the affected people we rely on your generosity. Please click here to find out about the donation options >>
Some of the projects we have helped with include:
NZ Spinal Trust Rehab Garden
By providing funding for the rehabilitation garden at the Burwood Spinal Unit in Christchurch, The Rugby Foundation has created a peaceful retreat for patients and visiting family to spend time during their term of hospitalisation. A similar project is planned for the Auckland Spinal Unit at Otara. Work on projects like these is one way that rugby, our national game, can via The Rugby Foundation, contribute to wider community needs.
Vehicles and Computers
Two of our rugby tetraplegics received little support from other social agencies because they were injured prior to ACC. We helped by purchasing vehicles for them.
We also purchased a computer and server for the business of another rugby tetraplegic.
Home renovations
After assessing the needs of our rugby tetraplegics, we provided funds to make appropriate home renovations.
Boarding fees
We have provided support to injured players families by funding boarding fees for secondary school.
Funding for on-going rehabilitation
We provide funds so individuals can attend Back Up NZ, which provides outdoor adventure activities for on-going rehabilitation and personal development for people with physical disabilities.
National Provincial Wheel Chair Rugby Championships
The Foundation funds the National Provencial Wheel Chair Rugby Championship and the Wheel Blacks in their preparation for international events.
Reactive NZ
Our support enables rugby tetraplegics can attend Reactive NZ. This is a specific physiotherapy centre for S.C.I rehabilitation, which is not funded by ACC.
NZ Areas Schools Rugby
Each year the Foundation runs the NZ Area Schools programme. This involves selecting and funding the NZ Areas Schools representative side who play a number of matches each year. In order to be eligible players must attend Area Schools which are invariably in remote locations throughout NZ. This gives these young men a chance to shine on the big stage and the results speak for themselves. A number of former Areas Schools players have gone on to higher representative honours including NZ 7’s, Super 14, Air NZ Cup and Provincial Academies.
